Late to Delay Vote Say Officials
Delegate
John Doyle is trying to change the date
that Jefferson County votes on the table
games at Charles Town Races and Slots.
Jefferson County, as well as the other
four counties have chosen June 9th as
the day they are going to hold the
special election, and County
Commissioners say it is too late to
change the date.
The Jefferson County Commission decline
Doyle’s request to change the date,
stating that it had already been agreed
upon with the track. They said that
ballots were already being printed and
the election was being organized – and
it would cost a lot of people a lot of
money to change it now. Doyle says that
the tracks have 90 days to have the vote
and he feels they are rushing it.
Officials say that if they wait the 90
days it will put the vote on July 4th
which is completely inappropriate. Doyle
suggested June 23rd, but the commission
said no. One county elections official
said that it might not be too late to
change the date, but other officials say
it would be too hard to change it now.
They said that it would cause extra work
for the county and that voters would be
confused by the change.
Doyle said that the amount of time that
they have given residents is not enough,
and that they need to reexamine the
date. The tracks say that the residents
have weeks to figure out where they
stand on the issue, and two more weeks
past that date is not going to change
anything. Many think Doyle is just
trying to sabotage the election because
he doesn’t want to see table games
approved.
