Gambling Talk Turns Heated
When
state representatives agreed to a
discussion of slot machine legalization
at the state’s racetracks, I am sure
that they did not expect it to become so
heated of a discussion. However, that is
exactly what happened at the meeting.
Art Adam of Preble had quite a bit to
say to his officials about what he
thought of their new slot machine
legalization for the state.
State Rep. Mike Ripley of Monroe and
State Senator Dave Ford of Hartford were
at the Decatur Public Library on
Saturday to discuss the legalization of
slot machines at the state’s two horse
racing tracks. A new bill would legalize
the slot machines, and allow the tracks
to bring in 3000 slot machines.
Adam had a problem with the fact that
they were allowing slot machines to be
legalized while they still raided
people’s homes and businesses for Cherry
Master slot machines. There were about
20 people at the meeting, and Adam
implored his officials to start
representing ordinary people and not
just those that have millions of dollars
in the gambling business. He said that
his officials were being “hypocritical”
and it was “absolutely ridiculous” to
even consider the proposal. He said that
their “service to [them] stinks” and he
wanted them to take action against the
bill.
He said that the removal of the Cherry
Masters from the American Legion Post 43
led to people losing their jobs, and if
they were going to penalize their
constituents for having slot machines
then they needed to oppose the bill
legalizing them at the racetracks. Ford
agreed with the gentleman, saying that
he had voted against the slot machines
at the tracks, and that the idea that
they were bringing them in to support
the horse tracks and their gambling was
just ridiculous.
