Traffic Problems for North Shore
According to
Stuart Anderson, traffic problems around
the Majestic Star Casino will be minimal
at worst. Anderson is doing a traffic
study for the casino to see how bad
traffic will be at the area where the
casino will be as the casino is being
built in the same area as Heinz Field.
The study predicts that on most evenings
and weekends traffic will not be an
issue as most casino traffic will
actually be spread out over the course
of the entire day – it is not like
everyone will only come at night. Also,
Anderson says that the streets in that
area are already running at way below
capacity, so the additional traffic will
not make things unbearable.
The owners of the Pittsburgh Steelers
and Pirates, as well as the Carnegie
Science Center have raised concerns as
to how the area might handle the
additional traffic that the casino will
undoubtedly bring in. Anderson says that
most traffic will come between 7 and 11
pm on Fridays and Saturdays, which is
off time for the rest of the area. Also,
he predicts that on game days most
casino patrons will opt to stay home
instead of battle the normal football or
baseball traffic that is in that area at
those times.
The science center is still a problem
however, as traffic normally gets so bad
during Steelers’ games that the center
has to close down. They want to make
sure that this kind of congestion does
not become a daily occurrence as they
have school busses and visitors coming
in at all times. If traffic becomes and
issue for their patrons, they just won’t
come. Not only that, but if it becomes
an unsafe environment for kids, not only
will they lose business, but they won’t
want kids coming where they might get
hurt.
