Illegal Peruvian Slot Machines Destroyed
Mercedes
Cabanillas, President of Congress, and
Mercedes Aráoz, Minister for Tourism and
Foreign Trade, took on a different title
last week – that of slot machine
destroyer. The two women destroyed
almost 400 illegal slot machines that
had been seized by the Peruvian
Government in an attempt to crack down
on the illegal machines. Between
December and January the slot machines
were seized at many locations including
the port of Callao.
The slot machines are called “de bolita”
meaning small ball, or “Chinese
machines” and are illegal, but they have
become de rigor for many businesses. The
number of slot machine addicts has grown
exponentially, including the young – and
officials decided to put a stop to it.
They are trying to eliminate them, or at
least reduce the numbers of illegal slot
machines, as their children have
developed a serious gambling problem.
The minister put out a telephone number,
513-6100-9008, for those that spot the
illegal slot machines to report them.
She is asking for their citizens to help
save their children. Tons of calls came
through from concerned residents that
want to help in the fight against the
proliferation of the slot machines.
The police are also continuing to search
businesses, warehouses, bodegas, etc,
and if they are found to be in
possession of the illegal slot machines
the business will be closed and they
will lose their license. Casinos will
still be allowed to operate the slot
machines, but only if they are
registered by this Saturday.
