Machine Sessions
Indiana’s
115th legislative session is coming to a
close at the end of this month, and they
have a lot to get accomplished before
they end. Senator Tim Lanane said that
they have much to do on the budget,
property-tax reform, and of course slot
machines before they can take a well
earned rest.
Whether or not slot machines are going
to get approved at their race tracks is
going to take up a lot of their time.
There are just as many in favor of the
slot machines as there are against them,
so lawmakers have their work cut out for
them. As they try and decide whether or
not to allow the slot machines, they
have been inundated with residents
trying to put in their two cents as to
whether or not they want them.
Just last week House Bill 1835 went back
to the House to enter conference
committee hearings after the Senate made
their changes to it. If they decide to
approve the slot machines, the horse
racing parks would be allowed to bring
in 1,500 slot machines to each location.
Both Hoosier Park in Anderson and
Indiana Downs in Shelbyville are excited
at the fact that they might get approved
for the slot machines. The current
licensing fee is $400 million per track,
however, which is a bit steep for the
locations. The money would go to tax
relief, but they are still negotiating
as to what the final up front fee would
be.
