Many
Wondering How Much Revenue There Really
Is
It looks
like voters may be the ones deciding the
fate of the slot machines in Maryland.
Legislators are considering making it
their choice as to whether or not slot
machines are legalized in the state, as
it will really be the voters that are
affected by the law.
With everyone giving different numbers
as to how much money will actually be
raised by bringing in slot machines,
voters could have a tough decision on
their hands. Come November, they will
have to decide who they believe in terms
of revenue.
The group Marylanders United to Stop
Slots says that there is no way to truly
know how much money the slot machines
can bring into the state. They say that
you simply have to look at economic
trends to know that nothing is a sure
thing.
They also point out that many states
have counted on their slot machine
revenue to be a certain amount and then
it wasn’t. The only people who could end
up shortchanged after all is said and
done is the voters. They will be
gambling on slot machines to prop up
their state, and from year to year those
revenues could vary greatly.
The governor’s camp is saying that the
slot machine revenue could be as much as
$660 million once all of the parlors are
up and running. However, some experts
think that they may be shooting too high
for their numbers.
