Machines Not Giving Much Needed Tax
Relief
Many in
the state of Pennsylvania are wondering
why they voted to legalize slot
machines. They say that they were
promised big breaks on their property
taxes, but then when it came down to it,
if they were eligible it was not as much
as they expected it to be.
They say that they have been listening
to the governor and the legislature
promise them for the past six years that
they would see tax relief if they would
simply allow slot machines to be
legalized. They say that they have done
their part, now when is their government
going to do theirs?
The average tax cut per house works out
to only about $169. Residents say that
this is not nearly worth the amount of
problems that they believe slot machines
will ultimately bring them. However, the
government argues that there will be
more cuts as more money is made at the
slot machines.
They say that when the slot machines
start bringing in the amounts that they
are supposed to, they will be looking at
a tax break closer to $338 a year. Some
property owners will see more than that,
but of course, some will see less. It
will simply depend on where you live.
But the biggest problem that they have
with it is the fact that they feel that
the amount of debt to be relieved was
misrepresented to them. The average
school district property tax burden is
only about $1,670, and some feel that
the small amount that would be given
back to residents should be used to
shore up their highways instead. They
say that they would feel safer knowing
that their highways and bridges were up
to code instead of getting back a mere
pittance.
