Are Slot
Machines a Done Deal?
There are
many in the city of Philadelphia who are
very upset with the idea of slot
machines coming into the state. As a
city they have worked hard to clean up a
lot of the crime that has plagued them
for years, and they fear that the
addition of slot machines will simply
make things worse for them. They
maintain that any addition of slot
machines is not a good thing for city,
especially where they want to put them.
Some residents said that if they wanted
to bring in slot machines that was fine,
but that they had to limit where they
put them. They wanted them put in the
warehouse district – away from schools,
churches and residences. However, the
state disagrees and instead wants to put
three casinos in their city and in
locations that violate all three of
those requests.
The city has also seen a flip flopping
of their government officials as to who
was on their side and who wasn’t. There
were officials who fought along side
them to keep the slot machines out of
the major areas, who changed their minds
and sided with the state instead just
this year. They say that they have been
threatened by legislators in Harrisburg
and that they have not done well in the
courts.
The state says that they will bring in
millions in revenue, but with so many
slot machines in the northeast now,
there is no way that the numbers that
have been previously quoted will come to
pass. In fact, the way they stand right
now, for every $2 that residents put
into the slot machines, they will get $1
back in tax cuts – why not just keep the
$2 and put it toward your own tax bill?
