Northfield Park Needs the Slot Machines
The Ohio
Racing Commission submitted a plan, the
“Proposal to Save Ohio’s Horse Racing
Industry” in hopes that they could
finally start to see slot machines at
the tracks. The racing group says that
without slot machines the tracks cannot
compete and is imploring state lawmakers
to reconsider their stance on slot
machines. They would like to see the
slot machines going to the state’s seven
tracks and in particular Northfield
Park.
The authority would like to see it
approved without it going to a vote by
residents however. They know that if it
goes to residents that they stand a good
chance at it not being approved, as
voters have already said several times
over that they will not be approving
slot machines at the race tracks.
The legislators that are pushing the
proposal to be approved say that it will
most likely not come under consideration
in the state budget this year, and that
it will be held over for another time.
They say that the slot machines could do
wonders for their bottom line in as far
as the state and the tracks go. They
know that many of the tracks are facing
true financial hardship because of the
competition that is out there from
tracks that are allowed slot machines
already.
The proposal is very similar to other
slot machine proposals that have been
voted on in the past. The only major
difference this time is that the
legislature would make the decision
instead of the voters. This has
obviously incensed many of the voters
who say that they have made their
position on slot machines very clear,
and if the state chooses to go ahead
without their permission that they will
remember it come election time.
