Machines are Popping Up
It is a
state law that slot machines are only
legal in one place, but there seems to
be those that know how to get around
that law. If you want slot machines you
have to go to the reservation in
Cherokee, but not if you know where else
to go. You can also go to Garner and
play slot machines, and no one is doing
anything about it.
All you have to do is go to the 42
Business Center at any time day or night
and give them your driver’s license. You
get registered and then you put your
money into a “recharge machine.” You
then sit down in front of the computer,
agree to the terms and conditions and
choose what slot machine you want to
play. All of the games that are offered
are slot machines, but they are calling
them something else.
They call them “internet sweepstakes”
and because they are on the internet it
is not gambling and therefore not
illegal in North Carolina. They say that
they are not technically mechanical slot
machines, they are on the computer. They
also don’t have random number generators
like real slot machines, so you really
don’t have any way of knowing what your
chances are.
As you win, you get more money which
gives you more time. As you lose you can
put in more money to get more time. The
location maintains that it is a
sweepstakes, but State Representative
Ray Rapp says that they are slot
machines no matter how you look at them.
He has been trying to no avail to shut
them down.
