Rendell Wants Money for Philly Slot
Machines
Some say
that Governor Ed Rendell needs to make
up his mind as to what he wants to do
about slot machines in Philadelphia.
Originally Rendell had said that he was
in support of bringing in slot machines
to the state, and by association in
support of slot machines for
Philadelphia.
However, then he said that he did not
necessarily think that slot machines for
Philadelphia were a good idea. Rendell
said that perhaps Philly should be cut
off from the slot machine revenues. Now
however, he has changed his mind and
says that he no longer supports such
legislation and that they should be
eligible for the slot machine revenues.
He said that there had been enough
progress toward building the two new
casinos in the city to make the law
unnecessary.
The slot machine revenues will be used
to help with the high taxes that
residents of the state are paying as
well as building various civic
development projects. But legislation
has already started and there is no real
chance of it going back. However,
Rendell always has the option of not
signing such legislation if he chooses
to.
He says that he originally said that he
would support the legislation because he
was frustrated with the lack of
cooperation that he was getting in
regards to bringing in the slot machines
to the city. The Senate Committee has
already voted 10-4 to cut off the city,
only because they were acting on
information that was current at the
time. Now that there is very little
political opposition to the slot
machines they are in a different
position with the city.
