Thoughts about Slot Machines
The
residents of Maryland are starting to
wonder if they made the right decision
in allowing slot machines to come into
their state. For years they put it off,
saying that it was not a good idea, and
that it would bring crime and addiction
to their state, and so slot machines
would have to stay over the border.
However, now that they have approved
them they are thinking that perhaps they
should have left well enough alone.
THe problem is that when they were
voting in the slot machines, they were
not actually thinking about what that
meant for them in terms of where they
would go. They were thinking that the
slot machines would bring in a ton of
money for the state, and they would help
out many under funded programs like
education.
Since voting them in however, they have
learned that not only were the numbers
inflated to where they probably won’t
get the billions that they were counting
on, but they were also not going to like
where the slot machines were ultimately
going to be placed. They never thought
about actually having the slot machines,
they only thought of them in the
abstract.
Now Anne Arundel County residents are
upset that they voted to bring in the
slot machines because they are looking
to put them at Arundel Mills Mall. This
would put slot machines in the back
yards of many residents who thought they
would be much further away. In recent
meetings to discuss the location of slot
machines, residents have been
overwhelmingly against the location. In
order to bring in the slot machines
zoning changes have to take place, and
many residents are simply fighting the
change so that they won’t have to look
at them.
