Getting Mixed Signals
The
Association of Members Clubs (AMC) is
trying to figure out what is going on
with their relationship with the
government. They say that they are
getting mixed signals at best, and the
government is telling them one thing and
the media something else. They say that
Junior Finance Minister Conrad Enill is
telling them what they want to hear,
instead of the truth.
Association President Bryan Phillip says
that Enill is telling them positive
things, saying that things are looking
good and that they are on their side.
Then Prime Minister Patrick Manning goes
out in the press and says that they are
closing them down – and that 7,000
workers will probably end up out of
work.
They say that they keep asking for
minutes of their meetings with Enill,
but he won’t do it. He tells them that
they are simply meeting unofficially to
talk, and that the foreign clubs are the
problem. Then they go out in the media
and say that the AMC said that – not the
government.
Enill says that they asked to see him
and that he is not going to have minutes
for a meeting they asked for. He says
that the Prime Minister has been very
clear in that he is planning on banning
slot machines and that casino gambling
is illegal. Enil says that the AMC has
been taking part in a loophole that
allows private clubs to have slot
machines, but that is coming to an end.
Enill also said that by eliminating the
slot machines they are not putting
people out of work because it doesn’t
take people to run slot machines, so how
can it possibly affect them. Officials
say that not only does it take people to
ensure that the slot machines are
running properly, the revenue that comes
from the slot machines pays wages –
without the slot machines the fact is
that people would be out of work.
The AMC said that if the government bans
slot machines, they would have to find a
way to absorb all of those people who
were now out of work so that they didn’t
leave them in a lurch. They say that
they will add more tables, etc. in an
attempt to keep them working, as they
are willing to take care of them,
something it seems the government is not
willing to do.
