Table
Games Opposition Gets Check
The State
Capitol steps in Charleston were the
scene of a peaceful demonstration
Thursday, where volunteers had lined up
at a vote no rally for table games. They
were sitting in front of the steps in
the shape of the word “NO!” in order to
oppose the expansion of gambling at the
Tri-State Racetrack and Gaming Center.
Phyllis Martin, treasurer of Cabell
County CAGE drove to the rally in order
to present organizers with a check for
$300 in support of their cause. She said
that she was disappointed that Cabell
County residents were “disenfranchised
from the voting process” and gave them
the check to show support and solidarity
for their cause.
With the vote coming on the 11th,
volunteers said that every little bit
counts and they were pleased and excited
that Martin came and assisted them.
Cabell County CAGE had successfully
defeated a casino in Huntington several
years ago, so it was nice to get that
kind of support.
The rally was organized by Mia
Moran-Cooper, who is the seven year
director of the state’s gambling
addition treatment program, and said
that they didn’t have money for a “slick
ad campaign” nor can they give people
swag to get them to vote their way, they
were simply speaking out from their
hearts. She said the donation would be
able to offset personal expenditures
made by all of the volunteers working on
their cause.
