Inland
Tribes Pay CA
As part
of the agreement that was signed with
the state of California and Governor
Arnold Schwarzenegger, three inland
tribes have agreed to share their slot
machine revenue with the state. In
return, the state would allow them to
bring in more slot machines.
The tribes have already given more than
$65 million to the state, and there is
more to come. The payments are only a
portion of the monies that will be paid
to the state under the compact.
The new compact allows the tribes to
bring in more slot machines than they
were previously allowed. Each tribe was
previously allowed a maximum of 2,000
slot machines. The new compact will
allow each of the tribes to bring in
more slot machines. They will be allowed
a combined total of an additional 14,000
machines.
In return they give a portion of their
revenue to the state – and voters liked
the idea. They approved the compacts in
February. Some of the tribes have
already installed their additional slot
machines, while others are waiting to
see what the economic climate has to
offer before spending the additional
money to bring them in.
