The
Facts and Myths About Slot Machines
(Part II of II)
Last time we discussed some of the facts
about slot machines and how what you do
really has no bearing on the outcome. We
also talked about the fact that the
house always has the edge and that
casinos are in the business of making
money not friends. This time we are
going to talk about some of the myths
that surround slot machines.
Probably one of the most common myths is
that a slot machine that has not hit in
a long time is due to pay out. This is
not true. There is no time table for the
machine because over the long run it
will pay out whatever it is supposed to.
The only thing that determines when a
slot machine will pay out is when you
push the button to play.
This goes hand in hand with the idea
that a slot machine that has just hit
won’t hit again for a long time Again,
not true. It is all having to do with
random number generators, the processors
that run the slot machine and determine
when you are getting a win and when it
will be a loss.
There is also the idea that the casinos
have some sort of magic key where they
can tighten or loosen a slot machine at
will. Not only can they not do this for
logistics reasons, but they also can’t
do it because it would be against the
law. They have to set their machines per
their gaming control board’s desires –
and they have to be checked and approved
ahead of time.
Finally, and this happens to be a
personal favorite of mine, if the slot
machine is cold when you touch it, you
should use cold coins or tokens, and
vice versa. The temperature of the slot
machine has nothing to do with the way
it pays out – and this has to be the
most absurd idea ever.
