Looking for Slot Machines
Phoenix
Mayor Phil Gordon wants to bring in slot
machines. He tried to get them into his
airport, but no one seemed to think that
was such a great idea. He thought
bringing slot machines to Phoenix Sky
Harbor International Airport would make
a great addition to their fair city,
however, it was not meant to be.
But now he is working on another deal
which would partner the city with
Arizona Indian tribes to invest in their
downtown and their businesses. Gordon
has sent a letter to the tribal chiefs
telling them that slot machines may not
have worked out at the airport, but he
has other ideas.
It seems that the tribes were not fully
interested in the idea of slot machines
at the airport, but they think that they
might have interest in other
opportunities. They had tried to get the
tribes to partner with them on the slot
machines at the airport in an attempt to
get them out of the budget shortfall
that they were experiencing.
Since legalized gambling can only occur
on Indian lands, there were many legal
barriers that kept the slot machines
from going in at the airports. This is
due to voter approval and federal laws.
The airport would have had to be
determined to be some sort of Indian
land for the slot machines to have been
able to have been put on them.
