Maryland Might
Want to Change Their Tune
Maryland has fought
for years to get slot machines into
their state. They say that the amount of
money that will come in will be in the
hundreds of millions and they want to
see their state start doing as well as
everyone else seems to be doing. They
approved 15,000 slot machines to come in
and now they are ready to start making
money. However, they are having a hard
time making that dream a reality.
Residents say that due to legal issues,
taxes and fees that were set too high
and political tampering and corruption,
there is no clear date in sight for the
slot machines to be up and running. Now
a race track is taking the state to
court because they have been rejected
for a slot machine license. Magna
Entertainment had applied for one of the
state’s slot machine licenses because
they did not pay the $28.5 licensing
fee.
The state says that if you want the slot
machines you will pay the fee, but Magna
says that since the fee was not
refundable they were not going to pay
it. They say that if they had not gotten
the slot machine license the state would
have kept their money. This is just one
complaint from the various companies
that are looking to get to run the slot
machines. They say that the taxes and
fees are way too high and that the state
is looking to make money off of the
companies instead of the slot machines
themselves.
They also argue that the numbers that
the state has put forth are not clear or
correct. They argue that in this economy
and with so many other neighboring
states adding slot machines that they
cannot guarantee them the amount of
money that they say the slot machines
will actually make.
