Slot Machines Won’t Save Tracks
The fact of the matter is that you
can give the racetracks slot machines
but it won’t make people like racing any
more than they already do. Slot machines
do not make racing fans, racing makes
racing fans It is unfortunate that most
tracks don’t seem to realize this simple
fact.
Time and time again we see slot machines
brought in to help an ailing track for
they say that it is the competition that
is killing them. They say that slot
machines are not a problem in as long as
they are allowed to have them to – but
they can’t compete without them. So the
tracks bring in slot machines and they
get people to come to their tracks – but
not to watch the horses; they come to
play the slot machines.
If a track is having problems keeping
their doors open, they should either
find a way to entice people to come, or
they should close their doors. By adding
in slot machines they are not helping
the racetrack, they are making a casino.
It is tough when faced with having to
lay people off and to tell them that
they just couldn’t make a go of it.
Everyone is aware of this – but it is
also dishonest to say that the slot
machines are helping the track stay open
because it is no longer really a track.
The horse racing industry may simply be
one of those things that has lived its
time and now has to go away. But adding
in more slot machines is not the
solution it is simply a band aid on a
gaping wound.
