De Leo Says He
Will Compromise No More
The
slot machine bill that has been sitting
in the House and Senate of Massachusetts
almost seemed like it had finally gotten
its legs under itself. However, the bill
that came out of the legislature was
then vetoed by the governor as he said
that he was not in compliance with the
spread of slot machines across the
state. The governor has long been
against bringing slot machines into the
state, but some thought that they had
finally gotten to a point where they
might be able to bring some in. The
House and the Senate finally agreed that
there could be three casino locations
that would have slot machines for their
residents to use. However, the bill also
allowed for slot machines at racetracks
and the governor said no way.
House
Speaker Robert De Leo says that they
have compromised enough and that they
are not going to compromise any more.
They want slot machines at the
racetracks in order to save the failing
industry – and he says that they have
already compromised enough. He said that
the governor’s veto of the bill was
enough to derail the slot machine
legalization permanently and does not
think that the legislature is going to
return to override the veto.
There
are many that thought that this was the
year that slot machines might actually
come to the state, but it would appear
that they might be wrong. It seems as
though the measure will fall short once
again. Governor Patrick has also
compromised where he said that he could
consider one track with slot machines
but the bill came with two tracks
offering slot machines instead – which
is why he chose to veto it.
