Machines on the Ball
Calvin
Ball is likely to become the next
chairman of the Howard County Council.
Ball says it is too early to tell, but
many already think that it is pretty
much a done deal. What is a done deal is
the fact that with State Senator Edward
Kasemeyer being promoted to Senate
Majority Leader, slot machines will
probably be a talking point again.
Kasemeyer’s main job will be to steer
Governor-elect Martin O’Malley’s
legislative programs through the state,
and trying to help fellow democrats –
but one of those issues will be whether
or not to legalize slot machines.
With
the majority of people in the state not
wanting to increase their taxes,
Kasemeyer thinks the slot machines are
pretty much a done deal. Taxes will have
to be raised, or slot machines will have
to be legalized. He said, “Some sort of
compromise [on slots] has got to be
reached.”
He also
said that “the majority of people don’t
want increased taxes” but the only way
not to increase them is to legalize slot
machines. Many think that since
Kasemeyer is now going to be helping
out, that there is a good chance that
the slot machine bill will pass as he is
well liked and considered “low-key” by
many in the government.
