Slot Machines Support Dogs
The
Greyhound race tracks employed more than
16,000 people and paid more than $151 in
taxes in 2005, according to a recent
report. The American Greyhound Track
Operators Association (AGTOA) released
the annual report today, and it said
that the annual payroll for the tracks
was more than $210 million. The tracks
are betting on the dogs bringing in the
revenue, but they can also count on the
slot machines to help them out as well.
The
slot machine revenue is a huge plus for
the tracks, as they were suffering
before they came in. It looked like some
of the tracks might have to close their
doors before slot machines were
legalized, and now they are doing much
better. The slot machines bring in
people, who then ultimately play the
machines as well as bet on the horses.
In addition to slot machines and racing,
many tracks also offer simulcast
wagering on the greyhounds, horses, and
sometimes jai-alai. Greyhound fans bet
more than $772 million on simulcast
horse races last year.
"While
this economic contribution to the states
where we do business is substantial, our
sport could not exist were it not for
our greyhound athletes," said Richard
Winning, president of AGTOA. "We have a
special responsibility to ensure
greyhounds are well cared for from the
time they are born until they retire."
