Oneida
Indians’ Slot Machines
The
Oneida Indian Nation has annual revenues
that are in excess of $400 million, and
about 3/4ths of that amount come from
slot machines and gambling. The tribe’s
slot machine casino and resorts are key
moneymakers for them, and they expect
those numbers to continue to increase.
A
recent report from the BIA states that
the Turning Stone Resort and Casino
account for more than $300 million of
that $400 million revenue. Roughly 70%
of the money came from slot machines and
gaming, coming out to about $215
million. The tribe lost money on its non
slot machine ventures – namely their
golf courses, entertainment venues and
lodgings.
Turning
Stone slot machine casino and resort
brings in about 4.5 million visitors
annually. Their other non slot machine
venture is their gas stations – the
tribe owns a chain of 12 – which brought
in about $110 million. The nation is
trying to put 17,370 acres into federal
trust so that they can be exempt from
local and state laws. The Department of
the Interior is expected to make a
decision sometime in 2008.
