Philadelphia Park’s Slot Machines are Up
and Running
Officially, Inez Perez is the first slot
machine winner at the Philadelphia Park
Casino – a slot machine parlor. On
Tuesday, the Philadelphia Park Casino
opened with 2,200 slot machines, and
Perez was the first winner. It may have
only been $5 – but a win is a win.
With
PA opening another slot machine casino,
and others still to follow, it could get
a little hairy for Atlantic City’s
bottom line. The slot machine casinos in
NJ are keeping an eye on the
competition, and waiting to see how they
will fare when all is said and done.
“When you combine that with the prospect
of a smoking ban in Atlantic City [slot
machine and gambling] casinos, I’d say
that 2007 will be a challenging year for
the casinos there,” said Joseph Weinert,
the vice president of the Spectrum
Gaming Group, a casino consultant
outside Atlantic City.
Philadelphia Park may have opened on a
Tuesday, but there were plenty of cars
in the parking lot waiting for their
chance to play the slot machines inside.
They are now officially the second slot
machine casino/racetrack to open in PA.
The slot machine casino is a makeover of
a 32 year old racetrack – but the
makeover cost more than $560 million to
do. Each of the casinos in PA will only
offer slot machines, but they are still
going to take business from Atlantic
City. If PA chooses to add table games
to the slot machines, Atlantic City
could be in real trouble.
