Philly Slots are Bringing Problems
With
Philadelphia poised to become the
largest city in the country that allows
slot machine casinos, there is much
concern as to what that will really mean
for the state. The city will host two
stand alone slot machine casinos, as
well as allowing slot machines at its
racetracks. Many say that the amount of
slot machines that are currently being
allowed in the area are just too much,
and the city cannot handle it.
Casino Free Philadelphia is trying to
overturn the 2004 law that made the slot
machines legal as they say the final
plans for the casinos came in after the
public was still allowed to comment on
them. There are concerns as to the
traffic plans that the slot machines
will require, especially for the
riverfront slot machine parlors. The
riverfront casinos will need the use of
I-95 and it already has more traffic
than it can handle. They are also
planning on widening the road, which
will only make it worse for regular
traffic, not to mention the slot machine
casino’s traffic as well.
Those
that will be living in the areas that
will be most affected by the slot
machine casinos say that the fact that
PA made it legal to serve free drinks is
just absurd. They are concerned that
once the bars close, all the drunks will
come to the slot machine casinos because
they can party all night. City
Councilman Frank DiCicco has asked for a
six month delay in the issuance of slot
machine licenses. He says he would like
further review of the slot machine
casinos’ plans.
