Russian
Parliament Votes to Reduce Slot Machines
The
Federation Council, Russia’s upper
chamber of their Parliament, voted to
close casinos and slot machine halls in
the majority of the country. Many were
shocked as to the unanimous vote on
closing down the casinos and slot
machines, as it passed 141-0 with two
abstentions.
The bill had already won the approval of
the lower house to close the casinos and
shut down the slot machine parlors, but
some held out hope that the upper house
would not pass it. The bill states that
there will be four zones where legal
slot machines and gambling can be
located, they are: the Baltic exclave of
Kaliningrad, the southern Krasnodar/Rostov
area, the Siberian region of Altai and
in the Primorsky region on the Pacific
coast.
Any other casino or slot machines in the
country will be illegal and must close
their doors by July 1, 2009. After the
collapse of the Soviet Union, slot
machines and casinos experiences a major
growth, and the Russian Government is
trying to basically put a lid on that
growth.
