Governor
Complaisant About Slot Machine Subsidy
Many
are confused as to the attitude of the
Governor of Indian’s position on the new
report that just came out from the
Office of Management and Budget
regarding slot machines. The office said
that the state might want to consider
taking the slot machine revenue that
they are currently putting towards the
horse racing industry toward something
else in the state – like their bottom
line. Currently, the casinos charge
their slot machine players a $3 tax to
play and $0.65 of that goes to the horse
racing industry – to the tune of $27
million a year. In the past ten years,
the sport has received more than $220
million in funding from the slot
machines.
When
asked about it, the Governor said that
he had more important things to worry
about, which left many wondering why the
slot machine revenue seemed so
unimportant to a man who is known to be
a penny pincher. This is the same man
who suggested renting welcome mats and
cooking prisoner’s lunches to save a few
bucks – and yet he is not concerned that
$27 million of slot machine money could
be going to a better place?
The
governor has a long history of trying to
keep the bottom dollar low, but $27
million of the slot machine money being
thrown into a black hole – things just
don’t add up. The horse racing industry
says it cannot survive without the slot
machine revenue, and they say that since
the state won’t give them slot machines
of their own – they need to support
them. Others say that if they can’t
survive off of horse racing without
adding slot machines, then it might be
time to find another job.
