Smarty Jones Brings Out the Slot
Machines
Philadelphia Park is known as the home
track of Smarty Jones – and now it will
be known for slot machines. Smarty Jones
was the horse who won the 2004 Kentucky
Derby and Preakness, and Philadelphia
Park was his home track. However, as of
Tuesday, his home is now known for
having 2,200 slot machines, a bar and
buffet – making it the second slot
machine parlor open in PA.
With
the addition of slot machines at the
track, purses are expected to get much
larger which will keep the better breeds
of horses in the state. The 2004 slot
machine law was set up to allow
racetracks to bring in slot machines to
help their failing revenue. Under the
law, the racetracks will get nine
percent of the slot machine revenues
that will go straight to their purses.
This has already garnered much interest
by the breeders.
Philadelphia Park, as well as the other
five racetracks that will be offering
slot machines, has received a
conditional slot machine license. If
they are approved, they will receive
permanent slot machine licenses from the
state on Wednesday.
