Want Slot Machines
Track
owners in Texas are trying to get video
lottery terminals – a type of slot
machine – legalized in Texas. They know
that without the legalization of slot
machines, the tracks will be doomed.
They say they will not be able to
continue to survive if they are not
allowed slot machines at the tracks –
they just don’t have enough to compete.
They
are talking about the fact that
neighboring states allow slot machines
at their tracks, and thus have more to
offer than Texas tracks do. Many tracks
are in dire need of the slot machines to
make up for falling track revenue. The
gambling competition they have been
getting from the other states is making
it hard for them to make their purses,
and if they can’t make their purses they
cannot offer racing. San Antonio’s horse
track, Retama Park, has already had to
cancel its 2007 season.
However, there is talk of allowing Las
Vegas type casinos to come to Texas –
and if they were allowed, slot machine
revenue could go to them. The tracks
know that the slot machines will save
them, but only if there is no in-state
competition. They could not compete
against everything the casinos would
have to offer in addition to the slot
machines. They say that those who are
not really into horse racing could be
drawn to the sport if slot machines are
offered, but if casinos are around, they
will go to play their slot machines
instead.
