American Legion’s Illegal Slot Machines
Police in
Haverville say that not only did the
American Legion have slot machines on
the premises, but that they used them
for illegal gambling – which is
obviously against the law. They have
violated the law regarding slot machines
allegedly twice within the past two
years, and police say that it is
unacceptable.
The American Legion says that they were
unaware that they were not allowed to
have the slot machines and have since
complied with all rules and regulations
that have been put forth by the police
chief. They say that the slot machines
brought in roughly $35 a week, which
they used to pay for Christmas and
Fourth of July parties for children.
They were not looking to make money off
of the slot machines.
However, the police chief says that they
are in clear violation of their slot
machine laws and that they obviously do
not have any problem breaking the law.
Chief Alan DeNaro wants to keep them
from getting another coin-operator
license as he says that they will use it
to get more slot machines. DeNaro says
that they have not been able to comply
with their gambling ordinance so far, so
they should not be given another chance.
However, the American Legion says that
they simply want to bring in a jukebox
and trivia game, and that they will not
be bringing in any more slot machines.
They say that they have tried to do
everything legally and that they have
apologized for having the slot machines,
but that the Police Chief seems to have
it out for them.
The council will decide whether or not
to give them their license, and although
they don’t usually, they can choose to
go against the police chief’s
recommendation and award the license.
Chances are that they won’t however,
which the American Legion is well aware
of.
