Machine Proposals Up for Vote
The
California Federation of Teachers is
speaking out against Propositions 94,
95, 96, and 97. They say that when the
state of California passed the
propositions they made a big mistake,
one that residents can now correct. The
pacts benefit the Governor and the four
“wealthy” Tribes that reside in the
state, but in doing so they have left
behind the other tribes, the workers of
the state, and taxpayers alike.
The problem that the group has with the
deal is that they have made promises to
benefit the schools by signing these
slot machine agreements, but in reality
none of the money is actually guaranteed
to go towards education in the state.
This is their opportunity to change that
and make their voices heard, per the
federation. They say that with the
tribes spending millions to try and get
their slot machine proposals passed,
those that did not have the money to
compete got left at the wayside. Then
they didn’t want the slot machine
propositions to end up on the ballot
where the rest of the state could have a
crack at it, so they paid more money to
try and block those that were gathering
signatures to get it on the ballot.
It only gets worse from there. They are
putting out misleading ads to try and
get people to sign up for their
compacts, and they keep harping on the
fact that they are giving millions to
the schools, when they aren’t. The
federation says that they would be the
first ones to support and vote for a
slot machine referendum that would give
millions to the schools, but this is not
it.
Under the current deal, no money is
guaranteed to go to the schools in the
state. They say that if the tribes want
their slot machines then they need to
earn them. They want voters to go say no
and refuse to approve the propositions
and make them change them so that there
is funding for schools, as well as basic
rights for all workers.
