Waiting for Another Decision
Moxie
Mania is the game that just won’t go
away. The state of New York had decided
that the games were not slot machines
and that they could be played in the
bars, etc. around the state. This meant
an influx of the slot machine like games
and people loved playing them. They
brought in money for the bar owners and
the patrons liked being able to make
some extra money.
Then last month the State Liquor
Authority Board ruled that they weren’t
“slot machine like” that they were
actual slot machines. They said that
they were illegal and that the games
needed to be removed from the bars as
they did not have permission to operate
illegal slot machines.
The company that has the right to
distribute the slot machines across the
state, Excelsior Distributors, then had
to pull the games from the floors of all
of the bars and locations that they had
put them. Now they are sitting with
hundreds of the slot machines in a
warehouse with nowhere to put them. Loy
Riggio, the president of the company,
says that he has $400,000 worth of
merchandise sitting here that he cannot
move.
The games look like a highly
sophisticated version of tic-tac-toe,
but they pay out large amounts of money
to some winners. Once the court said
that they were slot machines and
illegal, Pace-O-Matic won a stay from
the judge, so for now they are legal,
but no one is ordering any more games
until they know how this will pan out.
Not only that, but many want them gone
now, so they have been removing them
from the locations as well.
