Maryland Naming Slot Machine Committee
Now that
Maryland has legalized slot machines in
the state, they have to decide where to
put them. There are many locations vying
for the honor, but ultimately not
everyone is going to get them. They have
formed a committee that will consist of
seven people – who will decide where the
slot machines will be located.
House Speaker Michael E. Busch made the
announcement on Monday as to who their
first choices were to sit on the
committee. Democrat D. Bruce Poole is a
Hagerstown attorney, and was one of
those selected. He, Senate President
Thomas V. Mike Miller, Jr. and Governor
Martin O’Malley have all been named to
the committee along with Busch. They
also announced that Donald C. Fry will
be on the committee, and will serve as
Chairman.
The Video Lottery Facility Location
Commission is what they are calling the
committee, and it is their job to decide
who should go where and when. There will
be numerous companies vying for the slot
machines and it is up to them to decide
who would be best suited for the
position. It is not just about who has
the money to do it right now, and who
would survive the vetting process, but
who has it in them to manage them the
best in the long run.
There have been many instances of a
company bidding on and winning a slot
machine license and then not being able
to finish the job. There are several
locations in Pennsylvania that are
having similar problems with this, and
those in Maryland want to make sure not
to repeat the same problems.
