Airy Adds Smoking
The Mount
Airy Casino Resort has found a way
around the Clean Indoor Act and has been
able to increase the amount of smoking
area that they offer their guests.
According to the Clean Indoor Air Act
they are prohibited to offering smoking
in a public place or a workplace – but
there are some exceptions. Where food
sales are less than 20% of the business
– they can have more.
Well, the slot machine casino has
managed to double the size of their
smoking area because of a special
exception in the Act. They were
previously only allowed 25% of their
slot machine area to be smoking, and now
they have 50% of their slot machine area
smoking instead.
The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board
has reviewed their floor plan for the
slot machine area and has agreed that
they are meeting the requirements of the
Act. They are not alone in their
attempts to add on to the slot machine
smoking area, as all but one of the
state’s seven casinos has asked to do
so. The only one who hasn’t is Penn
National – but talk is that they are
considering doing so.
The exemption allows for them to
increase the size of their slot machine
smoking area if they can prove that the
revenue at the slot machines in the non
smoking area is less than those in the
smoking area. The law says that they can
submit their revenue figures and the
state will make a determination as to
whether or not they can increase their
smoking slot machine area and reduce the
amount that is non smoking.
