Navajo’s Get Slot Machines
The
Navajo Nation has long been known as the
only tribe in America that didn’t seem
to want to bring in slot machines.
However, the seemingly last holdout has
finally given in. The Navajo’s are
opening their first casino and bringing
in slot machines to assist them with the
monetary difficulties that they are
facing as a tribe.
They have long settled on a piece of
land that is located in northwestern New
Mexico, and this will now be the site
for their 64,000 sq. ft. Fire Rock
Casino. It will have 472 slot machines,
10 table games, and a poker room as
well. They will have a bingo room that
will seat 400 players, and is expected
to bring in more than a fifth of their
tribal budget for the year – roughly $32
million.
The opening was met with much fanfare
and excitement as more than 4,000 people
showed up for their opening, even with
it only being in a temporary residence.
The only problem was that it only holds
1,800 so there were hundreds waiting
outside to get their chance at the slot
machines.
Officials say that they are raising
money with the temporary slot machine
structure to build the permanent
structure. They have not yet decided on
where they are going to put the
permanent slot machine facility, but
they do know that when it is completed
it will have the casino as well as a
hotel and truck stop. They simply have
to decide where to put it, for after
having resisted slot machines for so
long they don’t want to make a mistake
now.
