Schwarzenegger
Backs Racing
The race tracks of
California
are happy knowing they have big fire
power on their side these days in the
form of their governor. Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger has said that he thinks
that the racing industry could use his
help and is willing to help them out. He
said that if “an appropriate offer”
comes across his desk before he leaves
office than he will approve it.
Schwarzenegger is in his final term as
Governor and will be leaving office in
January of 2011, which gives the tracks
slightly more than a year to try and get
something approved. He said that
believes that the tracks could use his
help with some sort of financial
arrangement, but he did say that he
would not back slot machines.
The governor said that
he is aware that they are struggling,
but he is also aware that bringing in
slot machines would be a big mistake. He
said that he could not approve slot
machines as residents have made it very
clear that they “despise urban gaming”
and he would not want to go against
their wishes. There are some card clubs
that offer gambling in the urban areas,
but all of the tribal casinos that offer
slot machines are outside of major
metropolitan areas.
Racing supporters have
been trying to get support in the
legislature as they know that without
some assistance they will not be able to
keep their doors open, which means a lot
of people will be without jobs. They say
that the slot machines are the best way
for them to keep their businesses afloat
– but the state is not behind that idea
at all.
