Slot Machines Get a Reprieve
The
slot machines in Columbus have gotten a
temporary stay from the state in that
they can continue running for now, just
until a decision has been made. The
state has said that there will be a
court hearing to decide their fate on
January 25th and until that
time the slot machines at the Spinners
Café can continue to operate.
The
games had come under fire as the state
of
Ohio
had said that they were illegal slot
machines and that they had to be turned
off. Prosecutor Ron O’Brien said that
they were the same as
Las Vegas slot machines and
therefore were against Ohio state law that says that slot machines
are not legal at these smaller
establishments.
But
the café maintained that they were not
slot machines at all and that they were
simply games that looked like them. They
said that they might look and play like
slot machines but they are internet
connected computers that use credits,
not cash. They said that the outcome of
the games was also determined ahead of
time which is one more reason why they
were not slot machines.
Judge
Harland H. Hale of the Franklin County
Municipal Court agreed that the slot
machines could stay for now, just until
the ruling. He held off judgment as to
whether or not they actually were slot
machines, and the courts across the
state are having problems determining
what they are. He said that they didn’t
have to get rid of the ones that they
had already, but they couldn’t add any
new ones either.
