Slot Machine
Request Withdrawn
Maine’s
only legal casino has been trying to get
a new kind of slot machine approved, and
has not been doing well at getting it
approved. The new slot machine had come
under a lot of fire as their opponents
said that it was not a slot machine at
all, and that it was trying to introduce
a new kind of gambling into the state.
It looks as though their opponents may
have won this round.
Hollywood Slots n Bangor, Maine
had requested to bring in a new “hosted”
slot machine, which looks a lot like a
table card game. They had asked
Maine’s Gambling
Control Board for approval of the new
slot machine, but the board said that
they thought it needed to go to the
state as a request for expanding
gambling. The casino said that they
didn’t need to do that as it was a slot
machine, not a table game, but the board
seemed to disagree.
Opponents said that the casino was
trying to bring in table games and that
only slot machines were approved at
their location. The new games looked
like slot machines in that they were
electronic, but otherwise they did seem
a lot like table games. Players would
sit around a table and a casino employee
would put in vouchers for them.
The
Gambling Board had left it that they
needed more information as to what the
games were, and they said that they
wanted to look into it more at their
December meeting before making a
decision. However, the casino has
decided to withdraw their request
without waiting to see what the board
ultimately had to say.
