Gemini Study Beginning for Gambling
Addiction
In
2002, Gemini Research Ltd. did a study
on gambling addiction, and how often
people gamble. They found that 19% of
the adult Nevada population had gambled
at least one a week, with 6.4% of the
population having a serious gambling
problem.
This study is the reason why the
University of Las Vegas has teamed up
with Harvard Medical School’s Division
on Addictions to assess where the rural
areas of Las Vegas are now, four years
later. They are looking for almost 200
participants, and are willing to pay
them $100 each to be interviewed over
the phone three times, over the course
of three months.
They are hoping that they will be able
to find out more about problem slot
machine or table gambling in rural
areas, where assistance is not readily
available. Larger areas such as Las
Vegas and Reno have a lot of treatment
programs that are available for those
with a problem. The outer lying areas of
Nevada do not have that sort of help.
One of the things they would study is
how that affects the gambling addiction
as well. If there are more places to get
help as opposed to little or none, how
much does that affect the addiction?
