Liquor License Won’t Save Bingo from
Slot Machines
Bingo
halls have been having some financial
difficulties, and now some think liquor
licenses are the way to correct that.
Many think that the bingo halls just
need to offer more incentives to keep
players from going to the slot machines
and casinos instead.
The Ontario Alcohol and Gaming
Commission is making it even easier for
them, and have set up a pilot project to
let the bingo halls apply for licenses.
However, not everyone thinks it is a
good idea. Some of the bingo hall owners
don’t think that it is worth the amount
of money that they would have to put
into the business to justify having the
liquor license. They say they don’t
think it would make all that much of a
difference to the players, as no one
seems to care that alcohol is not
offered.
The Gaming Commission disagrees – they
say that they have had several bingo
operators ask for the licenses over the
years, and have finally decided to help
them out. The Commission says they are
just trying to assist the bingo halls
since the competition between them and
the slot machines and casinos is fierce,
and the bingo halls seem to be losing.
Although they admit that they don’t know
if the licenses will help them or not,
as Bingo is mostly seen as a leisure
activity. Most people go to the slot
machines to win a lot of money – and to
have a drink. They are hoping that by
adding alcohol that they may entice more
people to hang out and have a drink –
while playing bingo.
