Slot Machine Terminal Revenues to be
Lost
There
is a current uproar of a proposed bill
that would change where slot machine
revenue was going to end up. According
to the budget bills that Governor Eliot
Spitzer announced this week. There will
be a poverty tax imposed that will take
almost $5 million from the city of
Saratoga Springs and Saratoga County.
State Sen. Majority Leader Joseph
Brunswick is planning on fighting the new
tax, saying that the money that would be
lost by both the city and the county
would hurt them tremendously. He says
that they need the money because of the
toll that the Saratoga Gaming and
Raceway have taken on them – their
roads, fire, police, ambulance, etc.
have all felt the brunt of the raceway.
Brunswick also says that the amount of
people seeking help for slot machine and
gambling addiction has increased as
well, and they need that money to
support those programs. The state’s
representatives say that when they
decided to allow slot machines at the
track, they were promised that extra
money as a means of supporting the
impact that the slot machine would have
on their area of the state.
The state wants to impose a poverty
testing the slot machine impact aid,
that would explore eliminating payments
to every city and county that currently
expects to get slot machine revenue.
