Mayor Blamed for Slot Machine Confusion
The
Riga City Council is calling for the
city’s mayor to resign after a series of
events that led to some slot machine
confusion. Mayor Aivars Aksenoks has
been mayor for over two years, but the
city council says that they believe that
the mayor’s part in the slot machine
confusion as of late is more than enough
reason to get rid of him.
Almost half of the city council members
voted to remove him from office after
eleven slot machine licenses had to be
revoked last week. The city had just
issued the slot machine licenses eight
months prior to the revoking, and the
mayor’s opponents say that he is to
blame for the confusion.
The council says that since the slot
machine licenses had to be revoked, they
are most likely going to be looking at
lawsuits from those who owned them. His
opponents say that there will definitely
be lawsuits brought against the council,
and since the mayor is to blame for the
slot machine confusion he should resign
immediately.
They also say that Aksenoks is
responsible for a concert hall not being
approved, and they say that this
combined with the slot machine fiasco is
more than enough reason to remove him
from office. Aksenoks says that he wants
to see a concert hall come in; he just
felt this was the wrong project for it.
Gambling has increased since Latvia
joined the EU back in 2004 – as has
their strip clubs. Many feel that the
mayor is continuing a downward spiral
and they want to remove him before he
can do any more harm.
