Indians Want Slot Machine Approval
The Buena
Vista Band of Me-Wuk Indians wants to
build a slot machine casino and is
seeking public comment on their drafted
Tribal Environmental Impact Report. The
TEIR has been submitted before by the
tribe, but it needed additional
information so the tribe had to redo the
report.
The tribe wants to build a slot machine
casino and entertainment facility on the
Buena Vista Rancheria, but needs
approval first. When their first TEIR
was found to be lacking certain
elements, the tribe chose to start the
process over and redid the entire
document.
The tribe said that they redid the
documents not only to make sure that
they got all of the aspects correct, but
also to show the state that they were
making a “gesture of good faith” and
that they wanted to do what was right,
not just what would be easy. They are
considering a smaller area for their
slot machine casino, so that there would
be less of an impact on the surrounding
areas.
The new project shows the casino coming
together in three parts. The first would
be 1,150 slot machines and 40 table
games. The second would bring the casino
up to 1,650 slot machines and 60 table
games. The third would round it out at
2,000 slot machines and 80 table games.
The slot machine casino would be called
the Flying Cloud Casino and would make
up 17.06 acres when completed. It would
have a slot machine casino as well as an
entertainment facility, parking garage,
wastewater treatment facility, water
supply system, etc. They are hoping to
have it open by 2008.
