Nevada Sees Dip in Slot Machine Revenues
Since
the law was passed that makes it illegal
to smoke around the slot machines in
most public places, Nevada retailers
have seen a dip in their revenue. Las
Vegas allows slot machines pretty much
anywhere, but where there were slot
machines there were smokers. Grocery
stores, convenience stores, etc. where
people used to be able to play and smoke
at the same times – it is now illegal.
Those locations are now feeling the
pinch of not being allowed to have
smokers playing their slot machines.
Since smoking is still allowed at the
casinos, many who want to smoke while
they play the slot machines are simply
going to the casinos instead of the
store. What was once considered a
convenience is no longer one.
The regular slot machine operators say
that it isn’t fair that the casinos are
allowed to continue to have smokers if
they aren’t, and claim that it puts the
smaller retailer at a disadvantage. The
new law went into force in the beginning
of January, but there are still many
bars that are ignoring the law and
allowing their slot machines to remain
smoke filled.
One grocery store owner admitted that
they followed the ban, and now they have
lost half of their slot machine players.
They say that they are still playing the
slot machines; they are just doing it at
the casinos instead. Not that everyone
is complying at the grocery stores, for
they still find butts on the floors by
the slot machines. They say that they
removed the ash trays, but every now and
then someone manages to sneak one.
