Yorkshire Wins with Slot Machine License
Yorkshire may not have won its bid to
host the slot machine supercasino, but
they did get something out of it. They
won three slot machine licenses to bring
in other casinos. Many were shocked when
the Casino Advisory Council voted to
approve the supercasino in Manchester as
opposed to the odds on favorites
Blackpool and London.
They won slot machine licenses in Leeds
and Hull to open large casinos, and
Scarborough for a small one. Sheffield
and Grimsby bid for slot machine
licenses as well and were disappointed
that they did not win. Opponents were
thrilled that Yorkshire did not win the
supercasino, and less than thrilled
about the three that they did win.
With opponents across the country still
seething from the issuance of as many
slot machine licenses as they saw issued
yesterday - Culture Secretary Tessa
Jowell said that there was no need to be
alarmed. She said that the environment
that the slot machines have in Las Vegas
will not be the environment that they
will have in Britain. She was quick to
note that in Vegas they serve alcoholic
drinks to keep people playing and that
won’t be happening in the UK.
She also pointed out that the casinos in
Vegas also pump oxygen to keep players
awake and playing and that won’t happen
at the UK’s slot machines either. She
also said that they would not be
expanding into any further slot machine
casinos during this term of Parliament.
Nothing is set in stone yet as the board
only makes recommendations to parliament
– who will then discuss them and vote.
