Spokane Slot Machine Deal Will Help All
Tribes
With
much talk of whether or not the state of
Washington is going to accept the
Spokane Tribe’s new compact, the state’s
tribes are waiting an answer as well. If
the tribe gets many of the things that
they are trying for – including more
slot machines, machines that accept
cash, etc.; many of the state’s tribes
are going to be looking for similar
compacts.
There are 25 Washington State tribal
casinos, and they bring in about $1.2
billion a year in slot machine revenue.
They fund tribal government as well as
local governments – and if they choose
to start negotiating for more slot
machines, etc. as well, the state could
be looking at higher revenues as well as
a state literally flooded with slot
machines.
The Lummi Nation opened the Silver Reef
Casino in 2002, and just renegotiated
last year to get 675 slot machines
total. That amount is the maximum
currently allowed by law. However, if
the Spokane’s get permission to add more
slot machines that that, the Lummi
Nation will be looking to expand as
well.
The Nooksack Indian Tribe runs the
Nooksack River Casino, and they would be
looking to increase the number of slot
machines they have as well. The casino
has been running for about 16 years at
this point, and they welcome some of the
aspects of the Spokane Tribe’s compact.
The compact allows slot machines that
take cash, as well as no limit table
games – both of which would be welcome
at any of the tribal casinos.
