Churches Think Slot Machine Supercasinos
Bad Idea
The
Archbishop of Canterbury is concerned
about the message that their government
is giving to its residents. They say
that the government allowing slot
machines and casinos to come into its
country is telling its residents that
gambling is ok and that it will fix your
problems.
Many are upset at the fact that the
British government chose to hand out as
many slot machine licenses as they did
without first waiting to see how one or
two would work out. They handed out
eight slot machine licenses for large
casinos, eight slot machine licenses for
smaller casinos, and then of course one
to Manchester for the country’s first
supercasino.
But they are not the only ones concerned
– although for a different reason. The
British Casino Association was upset
with the 17 new slot machine licenses
handed out, but only because they are
afraid that the new casinos will have
freedoms that the current casinos don’t.
The Archbishop said that when you look
at the research you can see how high the
level of addiction is with the slot
machines, and that they should be
looking to help these people instead of
profit from their misfortunes. He was
not alone in his condemnations – the
Anglican Bishop of Hulme said that he
thought that not only were slot machine
casinos a bad idea, but look at where
they were placed.
He said that the casinos were in areas
where people are already looking for a
quick fix for their problems. He said
that many of the slot machine casinos
were going to be right by some of the
poorest communities in the country.
