Sycuan Tribe Wants More Slot Machines
The
Sycuan Indian Reservation is more than
just your typical Indian reservation.
Back in 1983 it was just an bingo hall,
but now it is the site of hotels,
golfing, boxing, etc., as well as slot
machines and table games. The tribe has
been able to bring in a lot of revenue
through all of these other ventures, but
slot machines are still their biggest
money makers.
That is why the tribe is trying to get
more slot machines. They currently have
2,000 slot machines and 80 table games,
and are looking to add more. The tribe
does not have to disclose their slot
machine revenue, nor do the other tribes
across the country. However, it is
estimated that they bring in hundreds of
millions of dollars annually from their
slot machines and other holdings.
The tribe signed a compact with the
governor saying that they would be able
to bring in another 5,000 slot machines,
if it is approved by the legislature.
Governor Schwarzenegger signed the slot
machine compact with the tribe last
year, but it has not yet been ratified.
The tribe believes that once they
educate the new members of the
legislature, that the slot machine
compact will be approved.
They are also looking to bring in more
acres into their federal trust, and
expand their reservation. If that
happens there is no telling how far the
tribe will be able to go. Some wonder if
the tribe is looking to open a second
slot machine casino, but the tribe says
that there are a number of things they
could do with the additional land, such
as more housing or resource protection.
