Table Games Divide State
The
state of West Virginia seems to be
divided over whether or not it is a good
idea to add table games to their
existing slot machines. The legislature
cannot decide whether or not to approve
them or leave the slot machines alone –
and it looks as though it might go to a
vote within just those four counties
that will actually host them.
Those that support the addition of the
table games say that the state could use
the additional $40 million that would
come in from the games, and that they
should not look a gift horse in the
mouth. Opponents say that basing a state
budget on a form of income that is not
reliable is just poor business and poor
planning.
The legislators that represent Marion
County are truly divided – with both
sides of the fence unable to see the
other sides’ points. Senator Mike
Oliverio says that he is all for looking
for other funding sources, but that to
build the state’s foundation on the
“shifting sands of gambling” would truly
be a mistake. He said that by expanding
gambling they are changing their
children’s futures.
Senator Roman Prezioso said that he felt
it was a mistake to not allow the
state’s residents to decide whether or
not to allow table gaming in addition to
slot machines. He said that to simply
pass on the bill was unconstitutional
and that the people of the state had the
right to decide for themselves. He said
that he felt that if it went to their
citizens that many would approve the
measure, and that is why they needed to
allow them that freedom.
Others said that it should be determined
by just those counties that would be
impacted by the table games – others say
that the whole state will be impacted
whether or not they live in the specific
county that they are allowed in.
