Tribe Looking for Location for Slot
Machine Casino
The
Mashpee Wampanoag tribe is looking for
land near the 200 acres that they own in
Mashpee in order to declare them part of
their reservation. If they are able to
do that, then they will be allowed to
put a slot machine casino on that land.
The question is: where will they be able
to buy land?
Some have suggested Plymouth, but the
people of the town are not interested in
having the slot machine casino there.
About ten years ago a floating slot
machine casino at Cordage Park tried to
come in, but many were angry at the
prospect. There is an area at the
southern most part of Plymouth that many
have tried to purchase in the past, but
the town probably won’t sell that to the
tribe either.
There is a group that owns quite a bit
of land in the state, the A.D. Makepeace
Company, and as they own large portions
of land in Plymouth it is conceivable
that they would sell to the tribe. The
town would be against it, but as it is
not their land, they probably wouldn’t
be able to do much about it. There is an
airbase as well, but their Executive
Director said they did not think that it
would be a good location for a slot
machine casino.
There is also the former Fore River
Shipyard, which would come with some
challenges, but it might be a great spot
for the slot machine casino. However,
the shipyard’s neighbors are not
interested in the casino coming in there
either.
